I WANT TO BREAK FREE

I want to break free`, is of course, a song by Queen and expresses what many people desire and crave. So many feel `trapped` today and for all sorts of reasons and long to be `free`.

If there`s one movie I love watching over and over again is `Groundhog Day.` It`s a film about a man called Phil Connors who finds himself in a time loop that no one else is aware of, who relives the same day over and over again. At first, he is confused and thinks it`s just a weird phase he`s going through, but eventually realises he`s trapped in a surreal world where he`s living without a future. He`s desperate to`break free` but each attempt fails with more and more frustration. However, towards the end of the movie, Phil, and of course, with the help of a woman, does `break free` and starts to live again.

Sadly, the world is full of people like Phil, who are `stuck` in Groundhog Day, yes, reliving the same old, same old and without much of a future to look forward to either and often alone as no one else is aware of it as they struggle to `break free`. Throughout the bible there were many people who were wanting to `break free`: The Israelites from Pharaoh’s clutches, Mary and Joseph fleeing Herod, Jonah in the belly of a big fish, David on the run from Saul, Peter after his denial of Jesus and all those who needed healing one way or another etc.

Being trapped can be soul-destroying, but for all these people, their `break through` came by reaching out to God in the midst of their pain. So whenever you find yourself stuck in a rut, trapped or you just simply `want to break free`, I encourage you to keep trusting God and keep praising Him even in the pain and although it won`t always be easy to `break free`, persist anyway, and like with Mr Connors, you will eventually break through. Nothing is ever easy in this life but in my Christian experience, God will eventually bring you through.

Blessings. Pastor Steve

REFLECTION What problems have you broken free from in the past? How did this new found freedom spur you on Spiritually?

MEDITATION It`s our close relationship with God that enables us to overcome in times of difficulty. How can your faith inspire you to keep going or to help others who are struggling?

ACTION God uses our problems to toughen us up Spiritually and to trust Him more. Find a bible character who can inspire you to persevere in times of difficulty or when you feel trapped.
